Based Manchester/UK Travel

Federal Retail Trading Services Ltd (FRTSL) is a service company jointly owned by the Manchester-based Co-op Group and the independent retail Co-op Societies throughout the UK. Each of these societies are independent, who share a common organisational construct.

As Co-ops, their constitutions oblige them to work together where doing so brings advantage for their members, the most notable way in which they do this is in sharing a common approach to food buying and distribution. As the Managing Director for FRTSL, you will be the primary driver of all the initiatives undertaken jointly by the Co-ops under the FRTSL umbrella and play a pivotal role in designing new ways of working cooperatively together and then facilitating negotiations between the parties. The work of FRTSL is vitally important to all the societies, as a result, the Managing Director has a high degree of access to all of the CEO’s, who look for creative solutions and professional program management.

The Managing Director is involved in the various Co-op Group strategic forums and then chairs a large number of cross society working groups. The role is a step to the side from a direct line profit responsible position, instead, it is helping others with this task. In could be described as a cross between a facilitator, consultant, investment banker and counsellor.

The successful candidate will have a deep understanding and experience of UK grocery retailing, which will have been gained within a trading function. They will also have had some form of direct P&L responsibility and experienced major IT systems change programs. The individual will need to have a sharp mind and be able to learn quickly, numeracy and financial literacy are essential. They need to be an excellent communicator, both 1:1 and chairing meetings. You will have both gravitas within larger groups and the ability to forge long-term, strong relationships with multiple stakeholders. Above all else, you must be trusted!
